How to Measure Your Yard

Multiply length by width for each lawn area, in feet, and add the results together. A front yard 30 ft wide and 25 ft deep is 750 sq ft. For a curved or odd-shaped lawn, split it into rectangles and add them up. A close guess is fine here, because we measure properly at the site visit.

What Changes the Price

Lawn Size

Area is the biggest factor. Bigger lawns tend to sit near the bottom of our rate, while small yards can reach the $1,500 minimum. A 350 sq ft front yard, for example, is priced at that minimum.

Removing the Old Lawn

Cutting out turf, loading it and disposing of it adds labour and hauling. That is the main reason replacement costs more than installing on bare ground.

Grading and Soil

A yard that falls toward the house, or clay that has been packed down by machinery, needs more work before sod can go on. Yards with thin soil may need topsoil brought in, and we quote that after seeing the site.

Getting Into the Yard

A wide driveway and an open side yard make for a quick job. A narrow gate, steps or a fenced backyard can mean moving soil and sod by hand, and that takes longer.

Trees and Shade

Work near mature trees often has to be done by hand to protect their roots. In Mississauga, large private trees are also protected by by-law, so we plan around them.

Hauling Away Extra Material

Old patios, gravel, broken concrete and buried debris all need separate disposal. If we can see it at the site visit, it goes on your quote. If it turns up later, we talk to you first.

Shape and Obstacles

Curved beds, tree circles, walkways and tight corners all require more cutting and fitting than a simple rectangle. A yard full of edges takes more time per square foot.

Example Prices

Here is how the rates work out on typical yards. Add 13% HST to each figure. These examples have no grading included, and a real yard may fall anywhere in the range:

  • 1,000 sq ft sod installation: $2,000 to $2,500
  • 1,000 sq ft lawn replacement: $3,000 to $3,750
  • 1,500 sq ft lawn replacement: $4,500 to $5,625

Sod Cost Questions

What is your rate for sod?

We charge $2.00 to $2.50 a square foot to install on bare ground, and $3.00 to $3.75 to replace an existing lawn with removal included. Both figures exclude 13% HST. Where your yard falls in that range depends on its size, access and condition.

What does that price cover?

Installation covers clearing the surface, basic soil preparation and levelling, and laying fresh-cut sod. Replacement also covers stripping out the old turf and trucking it away. Grading work and any added topsoil are extra, and they will be listed on your written quote so nothing is a surprise.

Is HST included?

No. Every price on this page and in the calculator is shown before 13% HST, and your written quote shows the tax as a separate line.

How small a job will you take?

Our minimum is $1,500 before tax. That figure reflects what it takes to send a crew, machinery and a fresh load of sod to any address. In practice, sod installation reaches that minimum at about 600 to 750 sq ft, and smaller lawns are priced at the minimum.

Why can two sod quotes look so different?

The gap usually comes down to prep. A low per-square-foot price may mean sod is going straight over the existing ground, with little or no levelling. When you compare quotes, ask what is being done to the soil, whether hauling is included, and whether the crew is insured.

Can I trust the calculator's number?

It is a good guide for budgeting. It multiplies your area by our published rates and applies the minimum, but it cannot see your soil, slope or access. The firm price comes after we have walked the yard, and that written quote is the number that counts.

Do bigger lawns cost less per square foot?

Generally, yes. A crew's travel and setup costs stay about the same as a job grows, so larger lawns tend to fall at the lower end of our rate. We will show you exactly where your yard lands in your written quote.

Is sod worth paying for over seed?

That depends on how soon you need a lawn. Seed costs far less to buy, but on Peel's clay it can take a long time to fill in, and it needs steady watering and weed control while it does. Sod gives you a complete surface right away. If you plan to sell, have kids or pets, or are tired of mud, the higher price is often easy to justify.
