When a Lawn Can't Be Saved

Every lawn has a point where more repairs stop paying off. You overseed in fall and the same bare patches return in spring. You spend money on fertilizer, and it feeds the weeds. Grubs chew through the roots, the turf peels back like a loose rug, and the birds and skunks finish the job.

At that stage, the grass is usually not the real problem. Many Mississauga lawns sit on clay that has been packed down for decades, sometimes under a thick mat of thatch, and often on a surface that has settled unevenly. Water sits where it should run, roots stay shallow, and every dry spell finds the weak spots. Laying sod over all of that just hides it for a while.

Replacement solves it properly. We remove the old lawn completely, deal with what was holding it back, and start again with fresh Kentucky Bluegrass. If your yard has no lawn to remove, see our sod installation service instead.

WHAT YOU GET

What Lawn Replacement Includes

Full Turf Removal

The old grass, roots and weeds come out with a sod cutter or by hand in tight spots. New sod never goes on top of the old lawn.

Hauling and Disposal

Old turf is heavy, and there is a lot of it. Taking it away is part of the price, so you are not left with a pile at the curb.

Soil Repair

With the lawn gone, we can see what is underneath. We loosen hard ground and work the surface back into shape, and any added soil is listed in your quote.

A Fresh Look at the Levels

Removal exposes every dip and hump. Minor levelling is part of the job, and bigger corrections are priced as grading and levelling.

New Kentucky Bluegrass

Sod cut fresh at Ontario farms is laid in tight, offset rows and rolled into the prepared soil, so it can root into the ground beneath.

Clean Edges and a Plan

We cut neatly around beds and walkways, tidy the site and give you simple watering instructions for the first few weeks.

What Usually Kills a Lawn

Grubs

European chafer grubs feed on grass roots through late summer and fall. Damaged turf lifts easily, and animals tear it up looking for them.

Weeds Taking Over

Once weeds fill the gaps, each mowing and each season gives them more of the lawn. Past a certain point, there is not enough good grass left to recover.

Thatch and Thin Turf

A thick layer of dead stems can stop water and roots from getting where they need to go, leaving the grass shallow and easily stressed.

Compacted Clay

Foot traffic and years of mowing press clay tight. Roots struggle to get through it, and the grass goes brown early in every dry spell.

A Bad Grade Underneath

If a lawn dips or falls the wrong way, the wet spots stay wet and the high spots dry out. New grass on the same surface will fail the same way.

A Lawn Past Its Best Before a Sale

Sometimes nothing dramatic has happened. The lawn is simply old and tired, and it is holding back the look of the house.

Signs It's Time to Re-Sod

  • More of the lawn is weeds than grass
  • Bare patches return no matter how often you seed
  • Turf lifts up like a loose rug
  • Water sits in the same low spots after rain
  • Years of overseeding have made no real difference
  • You are getting the house ready to sell

Could it still be saved?

Sometimes yes. If your lawn is thin but healthy, we will say so, and overseeding or a smaller repair may be all it needs.

WHY RIGHT ON SOD

Why Choose Right On Sod to Replace Your Lawn

We Look for the Cause

There is no point replacing a lawn only to lose the new one the same way. We work out what went wrong first.

Nothing Gets Buried

The old lawn comes out completely. Laying new sod over old turf leaves a layer that blocks roots and rots underneath.

Removal Is in the Price

Cutting, loading and disposal are all covered by the rate you see, so there is no separate bill for hauling.

Honest Advice

If overseeding or a small repair would do the job, we will tell you. You should only replace a lawn that really needs it.

What it costs

Plan on $3.00 to $3.75 a square foot with removal included, before 13% HST. Jobs start at $1,500. See full pricing →

Lawn Replacement Questions

Do you remove the old lawn?

Always. We do not lay new sod over old grass. Buried turf breaks down unevenly, stops new roots reaching the soil, and leaves the surface uneven. Removal and disposal are included in our replacement rate.

How long does lawn replacement take?

Most residential replacements take a day or two. Removal adds time compared with a new installation, and access or extra grading can add more. We will give you a realistic schedule when we quote.

What happens to the old sod?

We load it up and take it away. It is included in the price, so you will not be left with a pile of turf or a separate disposal bill.

Is a partial replacement possible?

Yes, as long as the job meets our $1,500 minimum. A front yard on its own is a common request. Fresh sod can look brighter than an older lawn beside it at first, so we will talk through where the new edge should go.

Will grubs come back after replacement?

They can. Chafer beetles lay eggs in lawns each summer, and no sod is immune. A healthy, well-watered lawn with deeper roots copes much better with grub feeding than a thin one. Watch for damage in late summer and fall, and call us if you see turf lifting.
